Amazon Fresh stores to phase out Just Walk Out technology

Amazon is making a significant change to its Technology at Amazon Fresh stores, discontinuing the “Just Walk Out” feature in favor of a new smart cart system. This shift only impacts Amazon Fresh locations, not the smaller Amazon Go convenience stores. The company has decided to make this change based on customer feedback.

The new smart cart technology allows customers to scan items as they shop and view their total on a screen. This will replace the previous AI system that sent receipts after customers left the store. Amazon reports that this change has already led to higher customer satisfaction scores and increased purchasing.

Over 40 Amazon Fresh stores in the U.S. will be affected by this transition, with 27 stores switching to the new smart cart system. The remaining stores already use the smart cart technology.

While the “Just Walk Out” feature will be removed from Amazon Fresh stores, it will continue to be available in Amazon Go stores, as well as in third-party retailers across the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Canada. These locations include airports, college stores, cafes, and more.

The new Amazon Dash Cart works by allowing shoppers to scan a QR code on their Amazon app to begin browsing the store. The cart uses computer vision and sensor fusion technology to identify items as they are placed in the cart. Customers can simply walk out when they are done shopping, without needing to go through a traditional checkout line.

Customers still have the option to check out with a cashier or use self-checkout lanes if they prefer. This change aims to provide a better overall shopping experience for customers.

Overall, the shift from “Just Walk Out” to smart cart technology at Amazon Fresh stores represents Amazon’s commitment to improving the shopping experience for customers. The company continues to innovate and evolve its technology to meet the needs and preferences of its customers.
