LSU Women’s Basketball Sets School Records with 133-44 Rout of McNeese State

On Tuesday night, No. 7 LSU women’s basketball team secured a historic 133-44 victory over McNeese State, setting new school records for both points in a game and margin of victory.

Aalyah Del Rosario led the charge for LSU with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Angel Reese added 21 points and 10 boards. The Tigers easily surpassed their previous point total of 125, set in a win over Bellarmine in November 2022. Additionally, the team’s 89-point margin of victory eclipsed their previous 76-point win over Prairie View in 1995.

The game was tied at 10 before LSU went on a school-record 47 straight points during a 56-2 run, setting the stage for a dominant performance. The Tigers blanked McNeese 30-0 in the second quarter, showcasing an impressive defensive effort.

LSU head coach Kim Mulkey expressed amazement at the team’s performance, stating, “I told them (LSU’s team) at half I don’t know if I’ve even been part of that (holding an opponent scoreless for an entire quarter). And a run like that you don’t think about it in the moment. I don’t care who you’re playing. That’s crazy.”

The Tigers had six players score in double figures, demonstrating a well-rounded offensive effort. Overall, the team capitalized on the weaknesses of the McNeese defense, which is currently ranked 334th in points per game allowed among all Division I teams.

One standout player for LSU was freshman center Aalyah Del Rosario, who made a significant impact off the bench. Del Rosario, a Dominican Republic native, spoke about her growth within the team, stating, “It changed my perspective of the game. I knew I was going to have to step up, play big-time minutes on the court and take advantage of the minutes.”

In the broader context, LSU’s victory comes as the team deals with roster challenges, including injuries to key players. Despite these obstacles, the Tigers have demonstrated resilience and depth, showcasing the talent and potential of the team.

Looking ahead, LSU will host Northwestern State on Sunday, while McNeese is set to host Centenary on Thursday. With both teams focused on their upcoming matchups, the historic victory will undoubtedly serve as a source of momentum and confidence moving forward.

As the women’s college basketball season progresses, LSU’s dominant performance against McNeese State will certainly be remembered as a defining moment for the program.
